ARTIST HIGHLIGHT

Jodie (The Painted Dreamer)

Hi Jodie, tell us a little bit about yourself!
Hi, my name is Jodie and I’m from the western suburbs outside of Chicago. I go by the name The Painted Dreamer and am a freelance artist, Youtuber and small business owner who loves to paint, analyze and test new paints/mediums and just create in general. I also really love to bake when I’m not doing anything art related.

How long have you been painting & doing acrylic pouring paint art? What inspired you to become an artist?
I’ve been a creative ever since I was little always wanting to build, stitch, write or create anything that held my interest, most of it self-taught. I always wanted to work with paints but was afraid to try with my lack of drawing skills so I didn’t pursue any kind of painting until a friend of mine started working with fluid art and told me to google it. That was in March of 2019 and I really needed a creative outlet to get me through a few personal issues that I was going through at the time and after watching about a thousand YouTube videos and gathering the needed supplies I dove in and really haven’t looked back since.

How would you describe your style?
My style is more fluid painting and working with different mediums to create abstract paintings and designs. It’s very eclectic and can sometimes be a little chaotic in a good way. From there I don’t limit myself to just a canvas but also functional and wearable art utilizing my designs.

What is your favorite GenCrafts product to use?
My favorite GenCrafts product would be the pourable paints specifically the metallics. I absolutely love the metallics as they have a really nice sheen to them and are the right consistency for what I’m after. They are well pigmented when dried and work really well with the mediums I use producing anything from soft shimmers to bold in your face sparkle!

What advice do you have for beginner artists?
Don’t be afraid to start and don’t listen to the naysayers. Learn about what and how you want to create and just dive in because everyone has to start somewhere. Don’t ever compare yourself to others as you aren’t on their journey but your own, you are your only competition. Finally, and most importantly, enjoy the process and have fun!

What is your favorite part about the creative process?
The possibilities. That idea that gets stuck in my head. The brainstorming and the what if I did this, those stick with me and make me giddy until I get into my studio and start creating with those things in mind.

Tell us an interesting fact about your art!
With my art and art form, there really is no wrong way to do it. I think it looks more intimidating then it actually is. It’s amazingly free flowing in that no matter what color you use or what medium, once you have the basics down there are many ways to go about executing it and just as many artistic results, all of them unique and awesome.
