How to: Create Textures & Depth - Mushroom Art piece
we’ve created a video tutorial on how to create textures and depth demonstrated
on a Mushroom Art-piece! This tutorial demonstrates how to paint a detailed
Mushroom using the correct color selection of our 48 Watercolor Paint Palette,
and how to create textures and add depth to the painting.
Let's get started!
LIST OF SUPPLIES:
1. GenCrafts 48 Watercolor Paint Palette
2. GenCrafts Watercolor Paper Pad ( comes with the 48 Watercolor Paint
Palette)
3. A detailed Paint brush
4. White Acrylic Paint or Pen
5. A cup of water
6. Paper towel or Napkin
Step 1: Using the Watercolor Brush Pen that is included in the 48 Watercolor
Paint Palette, add the color “Tangerine” onto the top of the Mushroom.
Step 2: Add the color “Red Orange” to the sides, keeping “Tangerine” visible on
the right most region on the mushroom top
*Tip* After cleaning your Water Brush Pen, apply the clean brush to the right
most side of the mushroom top to enhance the light coming from the right side.
Step 3: To add more depth to the mushroom top, apply the watercolor “Scarlet”
to the outermost area of the mushroom top.
Step 4: For the stem, lightly dip your watercolor brush into “Cool Grey” and
“Umber”.
Step 5: Apply the mix of colors to only the left of the stem to enhance the light
coming from the right side. Leaving a white area on the right side to give texture.
Step 6: For the ground beneath the mushroom, apply the watercolor “Umber”
Step 7: Using the small detailed paint brush, apply more umber with less water on
the brush to add more texture the ground.
Step 8: Using the small detailed brush, add small lines to them stem of the
mushroom.
Step 9: To add more shadows and texture on the stem, apply “Red Orange” with
the small detailed brush.

Step 12: For the leaves lightly glide the center of the paint brush either towards you or away from you to create the shape of the leaves.
Step 10: Mix the watercolors “Golden Brown’ and “Black” and apply the mixture
with the detailed brush to add detail onto the stem.
Step 17: Again for the leaves, lightly glide the center of the paint brush either towards you or away from you to create the shape of the leaves.
Step 11: To create more dimension on the mushroom top, mix “Scarlet” with
‘Umber” and it apply it to the left side of the mushroom top using the detailed
brush.
Step 12: Using the small detailed brush, apply the watercolor “Pewter” to the
inside of the mushroom top to create more shadow and contrast. *Tip* The key to creating depth with watercolors is painting in layers. You build
more contrast by adding dark colors.
Step 13: Apply the white dots onto the mushroom top using a white Acrylic Pen.
( Feel free to use white acrylic paint or masking fluid).
Step 17: Again for the leaves, lightly glide the center of the paint brush either towards you or away from you to create the shape of the leaves.
Step 14: Apply white to the right side of the stem to add highlight and detail to the
ground as desired.
Step 15: To create more depth, mix the colors “Scarlet” + “Umber” + “Black” and
gently apply the mix under the white dots.
Step 16: Use the color “Olive” to represent the grass and apply it using short and
quick stroke with the small detailed brush.
